June 7, 2010 The only ecumenical church in Romania
Visitors from all over the world come to the ecumenical basilica of the XIV. century in Iacobeni, Jakobsdorf, Jakabfalva in Romania.
The first ecumenical church of Romania was consecrated in 2004 in the small transilvanian village Iacobeni which seems to have stood still in medieval times. After almost 20 years ago the Transylvanian Saxons had left Romania, the former protestant basilica was left to ruins. Father Don Demidoff is priest of the Independendent Catholic Church USA and has the church, which was built in the 14th century, renovated in and outside and equipped with the insignia of all Christian churches, even of the Jews, the people of Jesus Christ. Don Demidoff having written about his work with the street children in the last 20 years in his book "Priest of thorns" also describes the opposition against this ecumenical church until today.
Father Don Demidoff was excluded from the European Ecumenical Assembly in 2007 in Sibiu and his children were prevented from distributing the ecumenical paper of the basilica by the police.
The costs for the renovation of the historical church were raised by "compensations". These are the sums of money which Father Don Demidoff had been adjudged by German, Swiss and Romanian courts in processes against libel and harassment, including judgments against the Romanian minister of the interior as well as against the minister of health. Currently Father Don Demidoff maintains a welfare center for poor Roma (gypsy) children living in the five surrounding villages and every week distributes among others bread to the starving children.
There are a little hotel and a hostel (for groups) affiliated to the basilica managed by former street children of the Casa Don Bosco, Cincu.

The principles of the ecumenical basilica at Iacobeni
This place of mercy shall be open for all.
no church has the sole claim to God,
therefore nobody has the right to ban anybody from approaching HIM.
God is not a Catholic,
God is not a Protestant,
God is not an Orthodox.
He is not a Pentecostal, not an Adventist,
not a charismatic person and not an Evangelical.
God is just God
and his son is + Jesus Christ.
We look for HIM in this place,
we meet HIM in this place,
no matter of denomination.
Let your soul swing in this place steeped in history.
Let us give God a chance again
without pigeonholing HIM.
Open yourself to HIS unfathomable mystery
here in the old new church of Iacobeni.
