May 13, 2010 The Romanian Mafia Monster

Evenimentul Zilei - Romania The Romanian mafia monster Before the fall of socialism communism has exterminated the old intellectual elite of Romania and therewith destroyed the chance of having a new one some time. Today the country once again stands at a crucial point, says the author Mircea Cărtărescu in the newspaper Evenimentul Zilei: "The society has been squeezed mercilessly like in a grape press. This was going on for years and so there could only be a single wine: a bad one, the scum of party and state, which has ruined us for a long time. ... After 1990 we have let us rescued by some hundred representatives of our civil society and by several independent newspapers of our country: without their fight against the [fall of socialism incumbent Ion] Iliescu-Regime we would be the only [ex-Eastern block] country outside of Europe. ...But now we are at a crucial point again. You call it national bankruptcy, even there is a mafia monster controlling all resources. Mafia, that is politics, media; it has reached justice and is penetrating business. ... It can establish laws or ignore them, it is able to dismiss the President or to cancel institutions." (22.04.2010) Comment of Don Demidoff: Still today, 20 years after the so called revolution, there are intellectuals who do not yet dare to appear in the public. There still is the ill system "to be scared or scare somebody". For 20 years the state mafia also tries to boycott our humanitarian work, damage it or even to exploit us by excessive claims in Euro. Since several years they want to press 60,000 Euro from us. Brussels is well informed about these mafia practices, but does not take any steps or even answers our letters. Instead, further billions of Euros are sent from Brussels to Romania. Whose pockets are they going to fill?
