Oct 27, 2008 An important postscript to "The torture due to the torture..."

The news agency Reuters reports that Romania has been convicted of torture by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg already in May this year. In 1996 a defendant who was in police custody due to suspicion of fraud had been knocked unconscious several times. The European Court of Human Rights decided that Romania has violated prohibition of torture. The Romanian government has been sentenced to pay a compensation of 8.000 Euros to the tortured. Why do the Romanian media not report that? The suspicious had been arrested in January 1996 and had to stay in police custody for three months. He was hanged upside down and then knocked unconscious. Moreover, the police officers allowed his fellow prisoners to torture him and to force him to eat food, on which they had urinated before. In Romania torture is an everlasting issue and in spite of the current lawsuits is practiced until today, in fact to such an extent in the Romanian prisons that Amnesty International has been denouncing it again and again. But nothing happens and all keep silent, even the media. 100 prisoners in the high security prison of Codlea alone have documented the brutal torture they had to suffer. But the responsible do not have to fear any consequences, they even do not have to appear at the court hearings. Even in 2008 the old nomenclature covers up for the crime and the criminals.
