January 5, 2008 Extreme Cold in Romania

We will freeze to death without your help. The price for firewood is more and more matching with the prices for oil, gas and electricity. Children’s home needs help for the purchase of wood for heating Minus 31,6 Degrees Centigrade The acute onset of winter in South Eastern Europe has claimed at least seven lives up to now. Bone-chilling cold, ice and snow have paralyzed traffic in Bulgaria and Romania to a large extent. Bone-chilling cold in South Eastern Europe: In Bulgaria temperatures fell to minus 31,6 degrees centigrade, in Romania to 27 degrees below freezing. Snow and ice have also paralyzed traffic in Bulgaria and partially in Romania to a large extent on Saturday. In many areas in the North East of the country the state of emergency has remained in force, according to the local media. The coldest it was in Sewliewo in the middle of Bulgaria. Snowdrifts of up to three meters high obstructed the traffic on many country roads. Mountain passes could only be overcome with snow chains. Due to the strong wind the airport of Varna at the Black Sea remained closed. Trains had delays of several hours. Dozens of towns had no electricity, many no tap water either. The acute onset of winter in the Balkan’s country has claimed at least seven lives so far. A 30-year-old man froze to death in the region of Stara Sagora in Southern Bulgaria. A 65-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman died due to the cold next to their houses, according to a report of the public ambulance service on Friday. A 33-year-old patient suffering from a nephritic illness died on the way to the hospital in Ruse, because the ambulance was not able to get on due to the bad weather. In Romania extreme cold followed the strong snowfall: In the central Romanian village of Miercurea Ciuc (170 kms from Cincu) in the Carpathian mountains the thermometer showed 27 degrees below freezing the early Saturday morning. In the Southern Romanian lowlands next to Zimnicea by the Danube, where it is usually warmer, it was 23 degrees cold. Today, the 6th of January, in Cincu and Iacobeni the thermometer shows 27 degrees below zero. Our stocks of firewood, which were to last the whole winter, are already used up. In a few days we will not be able to heat our children’s houses anymore, although we have already pooled the children together. In our church some parts are frosted inside. Despite the Christmas donations we are not able to raise the money for the running charges anymore. We have been on duty for the abandoned children in Romania for 17 years now, we never have experienced such a winter.
